Mystery Oreos, Fruity Pebbles, and Sadness

I think that we can all agree that Oreos are the perfect cookie. I believe very strongly that they should be eaten in twos (or fours if they’re not Double Stuf) and milk is the only thing that maybe – makes them better.

The only alternative flavor of Oreos I’ve ever been tempted to try is the lemon flavor. Not a bad cookie, but not a great Oreo. And then, there is the Mystery Oreo. Nabisco recently put out a Limited Edition Oreo known as the Mystery Oreo, which consists of chocolate cookies filled with a mystery flavored creme and all I can say is – they are not good. At. All. But lets be honest, they weren’t supposed to be.

I initially tried them when I filmed a video for Foodie Beauty Life on YouTube. I examined, sniffed, and tasted this edible abomination – and after about nine minutes of examining and contemplating, I decided that I really have no idea what the flavor is. Here’s what I can tell you about my experience. When I opened the package, I expected a waft of Oreo–aroma. You know, that amazing Oreo scent that just makes you want to eat the entire package in one sitting. When I opened the package, I didn’t smell anything at all. I decided to get in closer and picked up multiple layers of scent including something that reminded me of Vienna Fingers, and red-colored candy (fake cherry/strawberry flavors).

The look of the Oreos was a bit different too. I felt that the creme had an ever-so-subtle tint of green to it as opposed to the extreme white of the traditional creme filling. The scent and flavor were so strong, that I was convinced that the mystery flavor was put into the cookie and the creme but according to the packaging, the cookie is chocolate and the filling is the mystery flavor. I’m not sure what I tasted, but I didn’t detect any chocolate. Instead the flavor was something that reminded me of red-colored candy (fake cherry/strawberry flavor); basically it tasted like children’s cherry cough syrup – but a little bit better.

The following things came to mind when I smelled them:

  • Vienna Fingers
  • Red Candy
  • Fruity-Childhood Flavors

The following things came to mind when I tasted them:

  • Red Candy
  • Fruit Punch
  • Something in the world of Swedish Fish (but not Swedish Fish)

After filming the video, I thought on it some more and I had an additional thought. Maybe it was maraschino cherry flavored? I chatted with several friends about this and they came up with some interesting ideas but none of them could say for sure either.

  • Orange sherbet
  • Circus peanuts
  • Fruity Pebbles

But the best guess came from my friend Jeremiah, who said that they tasted like “Fruity Pebbles and Sadness” and I have to say, that I couldn’t agree more. Let me elaborate – I NEVER ate Fruity Pebble as a child. It was easily one of the most appealing children’s cereals out there but I’ve never been able to stomach the “red candy” or fruit-punch-tasting foods. I keep going back to children’s cough syrup because all of the foods taste like that to me. Though I never ate the cereal, I feel confident in saying that the familiar, somewhat nostalgic scent coming from the Mystery Oreo package could easily be Fruity Pebbles.

As for the sadness, it’s not so much that eating this Oreo brings you to a sad or heartbreaking place; it’s more like when you see a broken person lift themselves up and put on a brave face. You commend them for their valiant effort, but they’re not fooling anyone – their soul just reeks of sadness, and trying too hard.

I’d really like to steal Jeremiah’s answer but I’d already submitted my guess. I strongly considered submitting children’s cough syrup as my answer but figured Fruit Punch was a better (and more respectful) guess. I know I’m not going to win, but I sincerely hope that Jeremiah does.
